The Vue Cinema, Hamilton recently played host to the premiere of ‘The Great Escape’ produced by the talented pupils and former pupils of Firpark School, Motherwell. The premiere was the culmination of a 3 month creative media project delivered by fps media and funded by First Light Movies. The ‘Great Escape’ is a light hearted drama which highlights the issue of transition from school to the world of work or further education and the challenges young people face today. During the project the young people learned the various aspects of filmmaking including scriptwriting, storyboarding, camera operation, sound, lighting and directing which enabled them to independently produce their very own short film. The premiere was attended by the young filmmakers their family, friends and local dignitaries. After viewing their film the young people were presented with a commemorative DVD and certificate from Mary Fegan, Head of Social Work Services, North Lanarkshire Council who praised the young people for the talent and enthusiasm they had displayed throughout the project.
A premiere of the films produced through the Lanark Learning Community ‘Schools of Ambition’ programme took place at The Vogue Cinema, Lanark on 22nd June 2009. The high profile event involved the grand premiere of 13 short films produced by Lanark Grammar School and 12 feeder primary schools in the Clydesdale area. The innovative ‘Schools of Ambition’ media project involved fps media delivering bespoke media training to a group of pupils at Lanark Grammar School. These pupils then formed a production crew who assisted fps media with media education within the feeder primary schools. Each primary school was given the opportunity to script, direct and produce their own short film which was then edited by the Lanark Grammar pupils. This peer education model worked extremely well with both the grammar pupils and the primary pupils gaining a vast amount of skills, understanding and experience through this unique experience. The screening was an astounding success with the young filmmakers delighted to see the fruits of their labour up on the ‘big screen’. The ‘making of’ documentaries also received a warm reception, providing the audience with an insight into all the hard work that went on behind the scenes. Cllr Mary Smith, Chair of Education, South Lanarkshire Council presented the young filmmakers with DVDs and certificates and praised the accomplished films and the talent displayed by all the young filmmakers.
